A shark-tank diving adventure, a popular activity for cruise guests in Nassau, Bahamas, faced a temporary closure recently following an incident where a 10-year-old boy was bitten by a shark.
The boy was part of a scheduled shark swim tank session at Blue Adventures by Stuart Cove. Luckily, he is now in stable condition after being taken to the hospital. He was later transferred back to his home state of Maryland, where a full recovery is expected. It's not clear if he was on a cruise or not.
This unfortunate incident marks the first of its kind at Blue Adventures since its opening in 2006. As a precaution, the excursion has been temporarily shut down while investigations are underway.
The activity is located at Atlantis Paradise Island, a resort near Nassau that is popular among visitors. While the resort offers various experiences, the shark tank option has been put on hold until the investigations are completed.
Despite this incident, other shark-diving experiences in the area remain open. Such occurrences are rare, and the closure is a precautionary measure.
It's worth noting that in 2022, a woman on a Royal Caribbean cruise was tragically killed by a bull shark during a snorkeling excursion in Nassau. Additionally, in 2023, another woman lost her life to a shark attack in the Bahamas, although she was not a cruise passenger. Such incidents, though infrequent, highlight the importance of safety measures and ongoing monitoring in these popular tourist destinations.
