Ramirez, known for playing the non-binary character Che Diaz, who was the love interest of Cynthia Nixon's character Miranda Hobbes, recently spoke out about being a pro-Palestine actor in the film and television industry. In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Ramirez expressed concerns about industry professionals allegedly creating blacklists for those supporting Palestinians in Gaza, potentially impacting their future work opportunities.
The actor, who identifies as non-binary in real life, hinted at a potential departure in the post, stating, "It's wild how performative so many in Hollywood are. Even more performative than the last character I played."
Ramirez has been actively involved in pro-Palestinian demonstrations, including the March for Gaza in Washington, D.C., on January 13.
According to The Daily Mail, a source close to the show claimed that Ramirez's character had been cut from the series. However, the source denied that the decision was politically motivated, asserting that the character had been on the chopping block since the previous season. The source mentioned fan dissatisfaction with the character, describing Che as "annoying" and stating that the character held no value after splitting with Miranda.
The Hollywood source emphasized that Nixon, a prominent pro-Palestinian activist, remains an integral part of the show. The source suggested that Ramirez needs to recognize the difference between "Grey's Anatomy" and the current series, indicating that Che's character was not pivotal to the storyline.
Criticism of Ramirez's character is not new, with both fans and writers expressing dissatisfaction. The Guardian published a scathing review, describing Che Diaz as "profoundly grating," and The Independent referred to the character as a "cruelly omnipresent stand-up comic."
As of now, HBO Max has not provided a comment on the situation.
