The Danbury school district recently found itself grappling with unforeseen expenses related to cybersecurity and special education costs, but received crucial support from the City Council to address these financial challenges.
In response to a ransomware attack on the district's computer network in July 2023, district officials swiftly took action by involving the FBI, the Danbury Police Department, and their cyber insurance provider. Although no ransom was paid and data backups were available, expenses totaling $202,274 were incurred to enhance network security and provide credit monitoring for affected individuals.
Chief Financial Officer John Spang emphasized that the district's cyber insurance coverage fell short, leaving them with out-of-pocket expenses despite diligent efforts to secure the network and safeguard sensitive information.
Moreover, the district faced an unexpected financial burden of $400,000 for special education costs, driven primarily by changes in Connecticut state law regarding the provision of education for students with special needs who turn 22 during the school year. Under the new law, districts are now obligated to continue providing services to these students until the end of the academic year, resulting in increased tuition, transportation, and other related expenses.
Despite these challenges, the City Council unanimously approved funding requests totaling over $600,000 to address both cybersecurity and special education needs. These funds will be drawn from the school district's committed fund balance, demonstrating a commitment to prioritize the well-being and security of students and staff.
As the district works to strengthen its cybersecurity measures and navigate evolving educational mandates, the support of the City Council provides a crucial lifeline in ensuring the continuity of essential services and operations within Danbury schools.
